Activities under this Cooperative Agreement

Consumer Involvement

Strengthening Consumer Involvement and Leadership (SCILS) Project

  • The CARE Act Planning in a Changing Environment curriculum will address many issues and topics and how they impact decision-making, such as the changing local epidemic, legal and policy changes like Medicare's prescription drug benefit, HRSA's goals and how they fit with local goals and priorities, how to balance primary care needs with supportive services needs, potential changes with Reauthorization, and how to use utilization data to plan for increased demand with less resources. Participants will learn and practice new strategies for incorporating this new information into decision-making. The curriculum will be made up of 4 modules:
    • Module One: Focuses on getting the participants to identify the changes that have occurred in the HIV/AIDS environment and their impact on the EMA as well those things that have not changed.
    • Module Two: Will describe the role of the consumer as a planning council member and as an advocate and will discuss what is meant by “meaningful participation.”
    • Module Three: Will describe how to make decisions.
    • Module Four: Will contain skills-building activities and focus on putting knowledge to work
  • The Consumers Leadership curriculum for PLWH ( LEAP) will be designed to coordinate/link with other existing curricula like AIDS Alliance's TOT. AED will coordinate with these other organizations so that the Leadership training doesn't duplicate skills and information covered in the other trainings, but instead serves as a foundation and natural step in the consumer education and skills development process.
