Going Online to Find HIV Care: TARGET Feature
Across the U.S., Ryan White agencies are making improvements to their Websites to help people find HIV/AIDS care.  Consumer-friendly tools like searchable databases of services and downloadable service guides are far more evident than what was found a year ago, according to an informal TARGET Center review of RW grantee Websites.  Examples include Houston's Blue Book (one of the grandfather's of Web-based service locators), New Mexico's First Appointment service guide, and Los Angeles County's map-based service finder.  Check these resources out in the TARGET Center Feature Article Exit Disclaimer

Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program Reauthorized
The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program was reauthorized on October 30.  The bill extends the Program for 4 years.  Jeanne White-Ginder, Ryan's mother, stood by President Obama as he signed the legislation.  See a video of the President’s comments about the legacy of Ryan White as he reauthorized the landmark bill that helps provide medical treatment to more than half a million Americans living with HIV/AIDS.

New Report Focuses on Peer Involvement
In February 2009, HRSA/HAB held a consultation meeting to examine the use of peers  in HIV health care settings.  A new report provides insights into the involvement of peers in HIV care.

The purpose of the meeting was to gain greater insight into the benefits and challenges of having peers on health care teams, to identify the major components of an ideal peer program, and to make recommendations regarding ways in which peer interventions can be funded and sustained within HIV systems of care.  Participants included HRSA/HAB representatives, Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program grantees, researchers, technical assistance providers, health care professionals, program managers, and HIV-infected peers.  Participants heard about the ways in which peers are being used in the fields of HIV, cancer, and diabetes to facilitate access to care, treatment, and health-related services.  View the meeting summary, including recommendations to HRSA/HAB for future peer programs.

SPNS Grantees Develop Strategies for Client-level Data
The latest issue of What’s Going on @ SPNS explores the challenges and advantages of using client-level data.  As of January 2009, RW grantees began collecting client-level data as part of the requirements of the new Ryan White Services Report (RSR).  Many Ryan White grantees and their providers are well prepared to collect client-level data and have been doing it for years, but others still have gaps to fill when it comes to readying their hardware and software systems for client-level data collection.  The SPNS grantees featured in this bulletin are at various stages of IT capacity development and they offer different strategies for increasing capacity.  View this issue. New AETC Network News: Training Pharmacists, Enhancing Continuing Education Programs
The fall issue of AETC Network News features innovative programs carried out by the Midwest AETC’s performance sites to partner with pharmacists to improve the quality of HIV clinical services.  Also featured is the Florida/Caribbean AIDS Education and Training Center (F/C AETC) efforts to increase audience interaction, gather essential demographics, and improve retention of data through the use of an audience response system (ARS) during many of its continuing medical education programs.  View this issue.Exit Disclaimer

CDC’s Prevention IS Care Campaign
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has launched the Prevention IS Care campaign.  Research shows that persons living with HIV often adopt healthy behaviors after their initial diagnosis but many revert back to risky behaviors after a period of time, putting their health and the health of others at risk.

Ongoing, brief prevention counseling is a cost-effective measure that can be incorporated into routine care for individuals living with HIV. Prevention IS Care includes tools for medical care providers to use on a daily basis with their patients who are living with HIV.  The campaign includes continuing education opportunities for medical care providers to update and add depth to their knowledge and skills.  Informational posters and brochures targeting patients are also available.  Find out more.
