HRSA/HAB News

Input Sought on Hepatitis C TA Document
Ryan White program input is being sought on a HRSA/HAB technical assistance document under development that will outline model approaches for integration of Hepatitis C (HCV) treatment within Ryan White-funded HIV/AIDS care programs.  In-depth interviews will be conducted with various Ryan White grantees that have successfully integrated HCV treatment within their Ryan White primary care settings, either as a whole HCV treatment endeavor or via other arrangements/affiliations.

In developing the TA tool on model HCV approaches, interviews will be combined with a review of existing TA materials produced by HRSA/HAB, grantees, and others.  Those interested in sharing insights on their programs should e-mail Lynn Wegman, Deputy Director, Division of Training and Technical Assistance, HAB, at < lwegman@hrsa.gov > by August 7.

Updated Tool: Handling HIV Care, First Visit Basics
A tool for primary care providers on initiating care for HIV-infected patients has been developed by HRSA/HAB's Mountain Plains AETC.  An update from an earlier version, it covers assessment, planning, and follow-up and includes two sample flow sheets that can be used to document care for patients with HIV.  One flow sheet covers such fundamentals as lab results and medications while the second addresses health maintenance tracking.

CDC Report Examines Sexual Health of Young Adults/Teens
CDC's latest Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) examines the sexual health of young adults and teenagers in the United States.  The data presented indicate that many young people in the United States engage in sexual risk behavior and experience negative reproductive health outcomes.  For the report, CDC compiled data from several different studies involving hundreds of thousands of teenagers and young adults age 10 to 25.  The data indicated that AIDS rates among boys age 15 to 19 increased from 1.3 cases per 100,000 in 1997 to 2.5 cases in 2006.  New HIV/AIDS diagnoses were highest among young blacks across all age groups.  See the report

Report Focuses on Future Shortages of HIV Care Providers
A new report, Averting a Crisis in HIV Care, focuses on future shortages of HIV care providers in the United States.  Released by the American Academy of HIV Medicine (AAHIVM) and the HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA), the report offers recommendations to policymakers on the maintenance of the current HIV workforce and the recruitment of new providers to the field.  While quantitative data that might clarify the state of the HIV medical workforce nationally is currently incomplete, recent surveys conducted by the two organizations of HIV care providers revealed some trends that include:

  • An HIV-treating workforce that will be retiring in increasing numbers within the next 10 years;
  • A workforce that feels over-burdened and under-reimbursed; and
  • Significant difficulty in the recruitment of new providers to replace those leaving the field.
